Installation instructions

With some exceptions, e.g. Apple devices, the general installation procedure is as follows.

  1. User types get.mobileguide.is into a mobile browser and presses the download button on the displayed web-page.
  2. The user accepts the download and installation.
  3. Download bar is displayed
  4. The application is placed in a folder on the device that varies wildly between devices and the installation is completed. Some devices ask the user if the application should be started, others will simply display an empty white browser screen.

Note that for most devices the application will perform faster if it is saved directly into the main memory and not a memory card.

A word on roaming fees

Although the Mobileguide application itself is completely free of charge your mobile phone service provider might add some mobile internet and/or roaming fees to your mobile account. This is dependent on your contract and varies wildly between companies and contracts, but prices between 0-8 euros (0-10$) can be expected with roaming fees. The application itself is small, ranging from 800-900 kb, but more for the iPhone & Android.  To reduce or eliminate the risk for any costs you should do one of the following:
  • If your phone supports it, use Wi-Fi to download the application. In Iceland there are many free hot-spots in cafes and public places.
  • Download the application in your home country (no roaming fees!), before coming to Iceland. All the data is saved on your device, so no mobile internet is necessary after the initial setup.
  • Download the application to your computer (not supported yet) and install it via cable or Bluetooth onto your device.
